Ylang-ylang is an oil extracted from a tree called Cananga odorata, known as the cananga tree (sometimes fragrant cananga, Macassar-oil plant, or perfume tree). This tropical tree has its origins in Indonesia and spread in the early 19th century to Malaysia and the Philippines.
The valued essential oil usually is extracted by steam distillation from fresh flowers, which are commonly found in the rainforest. The fragrance of ylang-ylang is rich and deep with a sweet, floral scent.
Ylang-ylang means “flower of flowers” in Tagalog (a Philippine language). The evergreen tree has slim smooth-bark and can reach 25 meters (80 feet). The flowers grow year-round and droop, are long-stalked as well as rich-scented. The flowers have six narrow, greenish-yellow petals 5 centimeters (2 inches) long. The pointed oval leaves are 13 to 20 cm (5 to 8 inches) long.
There are various Asian traditions around the ylang-ylang flowers. In Indonesia for example, they are spread on the bed of newlywed couples. In the Philippines, its flowers, together with the flowers of the sampaguita, are strung into a necklace (lei) and worn by women.
Ylang-ylang essential oil is often used in aromatherapy because of its relaxing benefits for body and mind. In various studies, the smell of the oil was found to also have an uplifting and harmonizing effect, reducing stress and soothing nerves. It is used in different treatments to support emotional and spiritual balance. Additionally, if you have ever been to Asia, or enjoyed some Asian wellness treatments, your mind will switch to vacation mode immediately upon opening the lid of our Happy-go-lucky Body Scrub.
Ylang-Ylang helps balance the production of sebum from our glands. It means that it is perfect for both dry and oily skin! If your glands produce too much sebum, your skin looks oily. Ylang-ylang can help your skin reduce that production. Conversely if your glands do not produce sufficient sebum, your skin gets dry and ylang-ylang can stimulate the production to reduce dryness.
If one suffers from muscle aches, for example post a yoga session, massaging your skin with our ylang-ylang Body Scrub can ease muscle spasms and reduce muscle tension.
The ylang-ylang oil in our Body Scrubs maintains moisture and oil balance of the skin, which wards off premature aging and keeps the skin looking smooth and hydrated (and sometimes even young :-))
And oh!... of course, we don't want to withhold another benefit that is ascribed to the use of ylang-ylang essential oil - it is said to work as an aphrodisiac. So when's your next date?
All in all - we promise that the emotional and beauty benefits of the tropical flower in combination with our Bee-Power will trigger happiness during your personal spa sessions. A mindful start to the day can totally set a different tone for the rest of the day!
No lotion needed after showering… that also gives you some extra time for a few more yoga exercises :-)
